As a Scottsdale senior photographer, I get to work with so many amazing students from schools across the valley—including Saguaro High School in Scottsdale. Every senior I photograph brings something unique to their session, and my favorite part is helping them feel confident, seen, and celebrated during such a special year. But if you’re a Saguaro senior or a parent helping plan the big day, there are a few common pitfalls I always recommend avoiding. These small choices can make a big difference in how your photos turn out and how you feel during the session—because I promise, this experience should be fun and easy, not stressful.
This might seem like the perfect time for a fresh look, but trust me—don’t schedule a totally new haircut or color right before your Saguaro High School session. If you’re dying to try something different, do it a few weeks in advance so it has time to grow out or be adjusted. As a senior photographer, I’ve seen so many teens wish they could go back to their usual style after trying something totally new the day before photos. Stick to what makes you feel most like you—you’ll feel more relaxed, and it will show in every image.
Arizona sun is no joke, and I know it’s tempting to add a little glow with a self-tanner or spray tan. But unfortunately, these often photograph orange or unevenly—even more so under natural light. If you do want some extra color, choose a professional spray tan from someone who specializes in photo-ready applications, and schedule it a couple of days before your shoot to let the color settle. When in doubt, your natural skin tone will always photograph beautifully.
I always encourage my seniors to bring more than one outfit—and I don’t just mean multiple shirts in the same color. Think about texture, fit, and style: a mix of casual and dressy looks great in a full gallery. Saguaro seniors are known for their personality and school pride, so feel free to bring something that reflects that! A team jersey, letterman jacket, or even your graduation cap and gown can add so much meaning to your images.
This might be the most important one: if it doesn’t feel good, don’t wear it. That scratchy top, stiff blazer, or shoes you can barely walk in will distract you the entire Saguaro High School senior session. You want to be comfortable enough to move, smile, and laugh without fidgeting. Confidence is everything in senior photos—and you deserve to feel amazing in every frame.
Senior year at Saguaro High School is such a special time, and your photo session should reflect that. By avoiding a few common mistakes—like last-minute hair changes or uncomfortable outfits—you’re already setting yourself up for a fun, stress-free experience that feels totally you. These portraits aren’t just about marking a milestone—they’re about celebrating who you are right now and capturing that confidence for years to come.
