Walking into a photo session can be a little intimidating. Modeling experience can be hard to come by, and a lot of us simply don’t know how to take a flattering photo. But don’t let all of this stop you from booking your brand photos! As a Scottsdale branding photographer, much of my job is empowering people to feel confident for their sessions, and now, I’m here to help you out! My first piece of advice? Find clothing that fits well. Not only will a flattering outfit translate better on camera, but it will also boost your confidence throughout. Trust me, when you feel good about yourself, it shows! From there, you have to know how to pose. A good photographer will guide you throughout your session, but it still helps to practice ahead of time. Here are some tips for posing for brand photos!
Facing the camera and posing straight-on will always make the brand photos subject look wider, and the poses tend to translate as stiff and awkward. To avoid this, all you have to do is turn about 45 degrees from the camera. Start with angling your hips, and then let the rest of your body follow. This angle is universally flattering, plus it adds depth and dimension to your portrait.

Negative space is essentially anything in the picture that isn’t the subject. In brand photos has the ability to take your viewer’s attention and turn it all on your posing. Throughout your session, you can experiment with different backgrounds that represent your brand while still showing off the star behind the name.

While you are standing at a 45-degree angle, pop your front knee to create a natural curve in your picture. This pose is a classic for a reason! Not only is it extremely photogenic, but it also gives you a way to look a bit more calm and collected.

Bad posture has the ability to ruin your pictures. Not only is it extremely unflattering, but it also gives the feeling of insecurity. Throughout your brand photos session, roll your shoulders back while posing. Most people have a tendency to revert to their normal slouched position, so make sure you do a posture check before each shutter click.

Leaning forward is another fantastic way to make your session feel more candid. If you are standing against a wall, place your lower body against it while moving your torso and head toward the camera. When paired with a laugh, this one makes you seem extremely confident!

Most importantly, add movement! This could be as simple as shifting your weight from one leg to the other or walking toward the camera. Doing so will take away all of the awkwardness that comes with posing while also showing the movement of your outfit. The result will be natural-looking pics!
